Zoos all over the world vie for the opportunities to care for rare animals from around the globe. These animals are usually endangered or on the verge of entering the endangered lists; they are usually well-treated and very appreciated wherever they are. Here are just a few of the most popular but rare zoo animals that you might find at your local zoo.

The Bengal tiger is perhaps the most popular rare species that you will find in the zoo. This majestic cat can be found in many zoo enclosures around the world, but is in danger of going extinct in the wild. With the implementation of several fine reproductive programs around the globe, conservationists hope that one day these majestic beasts will again roam their natural habitats.

Another very popular but rare species of animal at the zoo is the Komodo dragon. These fearsome reptiles are absolutely fascinating to watch from a distance. With their poisonous bite and enormous claws, Komodo dragons are a glimpse into the dinosaur age. They are especially popular with young boys who are fascinated with the dinosaur era.

Lemurs are another very popular and fun rare species that many zoos house. They are playful creatures, usually active during the night, and are beautiful to behold. Lemurs come from the island of Madagascar exclusively, and are thus a bit of the island’s unique culture. Be sure to seek out these fun creatures on your next visit to the zoo.

The Pinta Island Tortoise is perhaps the rarest zoo animal in the world. In fact, there is only one tortoise of this species left. Lonesome George is thought to be over 100 years old and today lives at the Charles Darwin Research station.

Rare zoo animals are rare because they are usually of an endangered species. Sometimes, they are so famous because they are one of only a few of that species left. From dragon-like lizards to playful lemurs to ancient tortoises and more, these unique animals are always exciting to witness. To see more rare zoo animals, check with your local zoo for a complete list of all the species that they house in your city.

Question by Bob: Are there any places in South Africa where animals roam free?
Are there any places in South Africa where wild animals still roam free and aren’t kept in any reserves or game parks? If not, why? and is there any other places in Africa where they do?

Best answer:

Answer by Biedronka
Smaller cats like Lynx, wild cats are able to live in the wild and in some areas, one can see small herds of antelope running about, but for really big cats like lions, no, they don’t live in the wild. In Western Cape there are some wild mountain Leopards, but again, extremely rare.
sadly, there is so much poaching going on. Animals need a lot of protection. There are some farms where animals roam around in the ‘wild’, but on the whole, most animals run about on huge nature reserves.
Building projects, like townhousing, holiday homes, golf courses, hotel and holiday resorts sprawl across many areas, so there has to be some sort of reserve to prevent wanton development.

Question by Answer-Me-This: How do zoos decide which animals to keep and which ones to not keep?
Is it only endangered animals in zoos, or popular animals, or animals that are considered more domestic or friendly or what!? Heck, is there even a criteria at all?

Best answer:

Answer by Jessica
The criteria is different for each zoo. There are many factors for deciding which animals to keep. A zoo must first be able to afford the animal and to build the habitat in which to keep it. Then they have to consider whether it is an animal which may interest the public. If that animal has special dietary or environmental needs (like if they would have to buy more than one animal) that needs to be considered as well.
Each zoo is different, has different funding, and has a different public about which to be concerned. Some zoos will have domestic animals such as donkeys and horses because they cannot afford more exotic animals or because their visitors actually enjoy seeing these animals. Some zoos don’t bother with these types of animals.

February is the month of love, and with Valentine’s Day behind us, it is only natural to feel a certain affection for those that were sadly alone on this year’s February the 14th. That is why this post is devoted to the outcasts on the animal kingdom, the species that sadly do not get as much love and adoration as the more fuzzy or “cute” animals do, such as chimpanzees, tigers and polar bears …

Children need to be educated about our planet and all the different life forms that inhabit the earth. Teaching a child about the millions of species of animals that exist in this world, half of them in the rainforests, is a good thing. This article on the endangered rainforest animals for your kids to know covers some of these animals in danger of extinction to create awareness among children. Since our children are the future of our country, teaching them is our duty.

Children need to be made aware that most animal extinction and endangerment is caused by human activities. There are many animal rights activists who strive valiantly to save the endangered species and stop extinction but it is a long, hard battle. Rainforests are under constant threat and saving the rainforest means saving the animals that inhabit the forest. Tropical rainforests are considered to be nature’s largest pharmacy due to the numerous natural medicines found there.

A few of the better known endangered rainforest animals for your kids to know include:

Gorilla – found in the west central African rainforests of Zaire and Rwanda are in danger of being wiped out through loss of habitat and being hunted as bush meat. The Ebola virus has already done significant damage to the Gorilla population.

Golden Lion Tamarind Monkey – is probably one the most endangered of all the rainforest animals and is nearly extinct. The fur of these monkeys is extremely valuable and can fetch as much as 20,000 dollars on the black market. Their number has diminished drastically and only a few of the species are to be found in the Brazilian rainforests.

Jaguar – one of the sleekest of all beasts of prey, this magnificent animal is on the endangered list. Hunting although prohibited in most countries continues to drive the species nearer to extinction with each passing year.

Bengal Tiger – there are only approximately 4000 of these animals left in the wilds of the Sundarbans in India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, China and Siberia. When you consider that they numbered roughly 50000 in the 1900s, you will realize how much damage man has done by poaching not just these beautiful animals but their land.

Most of us know and love the Orangutan and it is sad to know that these cute creatures with their mops of orange hair are on the endangered list. Destruction and loss of habitat coupled with poaching and being hunted as an exotic species have led to the decline in numbers.

This list is only the beginning of a very long list of endangered rainforest animals for your kids to know. Encourage them to visit as many sites as possible to learn more and teach them to be motivated towards saving the endangered animals.
