A favorite place to visit for families with young children is the zoo. These zoo animals are often placed into areas that have been designed to recreate the environment from their natural habitat. Monkeys will often be in a penned in area where there are rock formations and trees so they have plenty of items to climb on. There is usually a pond or stream in this pen as well to provide them with a place where they can wash or just have fun.

To protect people from the animals in zoos each area containing wild animals will have a gorge surrounding it, which separates the penned in creatures from the people watching them. This gorge is too wide for any of the creatures inside to get past. There are some exceptions to this type of habitat, which includes the small animals and birds. Birds will usually be housed in their own aviary. This building will be made with a very high ceiling to allow the birds inside to fly freely. It will also have many indoor trees they can roost in.

When browsing past the different pens and cages in a zoo you will see they have a podium or stand outside that contains information pertaining to the specific creature. This is helpful when trying to determine which ones are considered to be rare animals. Pandas are one of the rarer species and do not breed well in captivity. White tigers are also rare creatures and have been bred successfully in many zoos. Every zoo has an indoor and an outdoor space for all of the different species. In cold climates the indoor spaces provide a warm habitat until the warmer months return. The small mammals are generally kept inside all year round to protect them from other dangerous species.

While at the zoo you might see an animal or two that can come directly up to the fence to be petted. The llama is usually allowed to walk up to visitors and generally has an amiable disposition. A farm animal can also be kept in a petting zoo so children have the chance to interact with them on a first hand basis.
